  1. Went to Japan last summer, really nice experience. My family and i had some trouble there especially in trying to adapt to their language and new locations, but every person there was very kind and helpful.

  2. What you guys all see is just the outside part of the Japanese in which they are just acting polite yeah they are just acting. You can never really see the true inside part of them and you’ll never really know. Most of you guy just don’t know that behind all those wonderful covers, Japanese actually lived in a very oppressive environment in which their are so many latent rules and other factors in which actually forced Japanese acting so polite and have such of manner in front of people and in every and any situations even in front of and with close friends and families and forced them to feel the mood and atmosphere of other people and the situation and forced them to really to know how to and actually hide their true self, emotions, and feelings among others.

    日本人にはいつもの事が外国人が違った視線で答えてくれるのが
    とても参考になりますね。
    これからも楽しみにしています。

  4. There are certainly a lot of very kind, caring, and generous Japanese people out there.

Japanese people tend to open up more with foreigners who can speak the language and sound somewhat native. The challenge here is not just knowing the grammar and vocab, but also which particular phrasing works best in the given context. The Japanese language is as nuanced if not even much more so than English. Japanese people are usually nice to westerners in general because they want them to have a positive opinion of their country, and because interactions with westerners are still somewhat novel/unique in Japan.

It does drive me a bit mad to see people assume Japanese people like them just because they are polite (look up hone/tatemae). Japanese culture also pressures people to forget self desires in favor of group order – so some of these niceties could be things Japanese people feel they “should” do. I don’t think this would maybe be as common with one-off interactions with foreigners, but Japanese people absolutely do badmouth people among their friends/family in private while acting non-confrontational and indirectly polite in public.

Not trying to bash Japanese people here (I’m part Japanese!). Many Japanese people are genuinely kind, and even if some of the kind deeds are out of social duty they’re still very nice. But the Japanese are still human too, and it can be harder to TRULY know if they’re kind as individuals than these tourists would suggest.

  5. Well, YES, they are polite – even video game characters in Japanese video games typically show a lot of manners and are more modest.
Japanese even has different vocabulary for different levels of politeness, and you are expected to use polite speech when you talk to strangers.

  6. I've never actually had the chance to meet or communicate with any Japanese people, however, 2 girls on a foreign exchange from Japan came to my school and my first/only impression of them is that they are pretty shy but extremely kind! ^-^

  7. Japanese are fake, people have worked on Japan who are not white – so they don't have that privilege, although Japanese tend to show their manners outside but inside they backstab and talk trash and really don't live up to what they tend to portray outside the public, so yes they're not all that nice like what these weeboos tend to think, not all Japanese are like this but most are.

  8. I disagree. I've traveled quite a bit, and noticed that most developed countries are more polite and willing to help, and in Asia they will be even more so if you're white skinned, European. But when I was there, although some did help, there were many who 'shied' away, or simply didn't want to talk. Also, although particularly shop owners were polite, this was only an act so they could sell me the most expensive items (or anything really) and what I've noticed was they would start almost shouting their polite words when I wasn't interested. It seemed to me that it was more pretend politeness in a shy way than actual. You can tell this from posture, smile and intonation.

  9. i think they are very friendly with Tourists…..but some of they are very mean with people that go to live in japan, they call " gaijin" in a pejorative way. I´m brazilian, and i know that they play latin songs in some stores to alert others japaneses that a brazilian enter in the store and they can steal from you….that is so mean, cause not all Brazilians are thieves.

  10. Very Friendly and polite!

I have a couple of positive experiences. First, this was the day I planned on going to Ikaho Onsen, after getting off the train and head off and tried to walk around to find it,ended up lost and wound up getting help from a local that not only give pointed me the write direction, she gave a ride in her car right to it! Second one,in Okinawa, asking the local police for directions. They let me use their phone, helped translate some over the phone and one of the female officers gave me a orange and some cookies!

  12. This is actually really reassuring, I was really worried about going to Japan because I've always heard it's quite racist (even though there were no black people in this video…) but at least I might find that there are nice people there.

  13. Japanese people are extremly kind and hilarious. I experienced in Japan when i was eating some fast food, that i fell backwards of the chair, and a bunch of money fell out of my pocket. A japanese guy acted as if he stole my money, but he just picked it up for me and we laughed it of.. Great humor, great people, so much positivity.

  14. I agree that Japanese are really that nice!
I was once on my way to the airport, and I think I bought too much that not all of my things fit in my super big luggage. When I arrived at the station, somehow the elevator didn't work and there were no escalator so I had to use stairs…
Halfway of the stairs I can't stand bringing my big luggage and my bag downstairs so I just left it on the stairs (it wasn't crowded so I just left it there) to bring my luggage down and then get it later.
But when I was finally downstairs a guy brought my bag all the way down and gave it to me. I was surprised because I didn't even asked for help but he helped me voluntarily!
And the second one was when I slipped and fell down and my things are scattered at the ground, someone helped me to get up and keep asking me "daijoubu? daijoubu? kiotsukete ne" and another one helped me getting my things back.
They're so nice eventhough they are bit shy to talk with foreigners! I'm touched.
I don't even know if that will happen in my country… my best bet is that someone will steal my bag and people will just look at me when I fell down (if it's in my country).

Btw I'm Asian so yeah, Japanese are kind to everyone 🙂

  15. i just realise that you only conduct interview to white foreigner and european foreigner only. it would be so much better if you also conduct interview to asian foreigner, so you could see from their perspective as well. and you'll also get more accurate result

  16. I'd really like you to ask more Asian people in these kinds of interviews. Western foreigners really stand out in Japan which I thought might have influenced Japanese's reactions to them. I'm not saying Japanese are actually mean/unkind people or anything. So far, the Japanese people I've met in my country (Malaysia) and elsewhere are as nice and polite as people say they are. I just wonder what they think of us South-east Asians when we're there in Japan. We don't look alike for sure, for example, Malaysians, Indonesians, Filipinos and even Indians have generally tanner skin and different features. We also may behave/dress differently than Europeans or people of the Americas. Maybe you could try spot more Asian/South-east Asian foreigners or try ask Japanese people what they think of fellow Asians (:

Your videos are great by the way. I love your costumes 😀

  17. they just use a lot of tatemae(a facade. sth like to smooth out relations between people but doesnt speak out their true feelings) in their daily life. but nevertheless they are nice! if you ask them for help they will definitely try their best to help you!

  18. Many foreigners make the mistake of thinking this is what Japanese society is like. The reason they get this kind of treatment is because they look very foreign and they don't speak Japanese. The better your Japanese and the more Japanese you look, the less people will go out of their way to help you. If your Japanese is fine then people will just point or tell you where something is, just as in any other country. Japanese see foreigners (especially white people) as a novelty so they get over excited about the rare interaction with a foreigner. Most of the time when you see niceness in Japan it's just a facade, don't mistake it for genuine kindness (although there are kind people just like in any country, I'm just saying most of the smiley faced behaviour is fake).
